Tour of California
No, not the Amgen Tour of California. We're chatting today about the Rippers’ Three Peaks of Mega Bike Riding Excellence All Around the Bay in a Day Tour of California. Duh.Beginning in my hometown of Mill Valley, we ride to the peak of Mount Tam. A speedy and frigid descent ensues since we've started this hearty adventure at 5am. We'll grab secretly stashed backpacks and ride into San Francisco and hop on the train, whereupon we'll swap into fresh and clean kit and be shuttled to San Jose and begin the 120 mile ride up and over Hamilton across the state of California and up and over Mount Diablo. Next we pedal -- or hopefully are able to coast -- into Walnut Creek where we'll grab another train back into the city. Riding segment three is from the city back into Marin thereby completing the "Tour" which will tick our odometers and altimeters towards 180 miles of distance and more than 16,000 feet of climbing. (That's just the riding portion. The train is not part of those tallies.)Hmm, what else is 180 miles in one day? Milan San Remo which just so happens to be Sunday. Are they starting at 5am, forced onto trains, have three enormous climbs along the way? Of course not.Of course, they're also not doing it with seven of their best friends, they're not eating maple syrup and cookies and Red Bull and potato chips throughout the day, they're not waking up giddy at 4am to pull of this absurdity, and even though Milan San Remo has an impressively historical heritage, their ride is not three years in the making and the mastermind of my friend Nate who is co-captain of this ride (I designated myself the other co-captain since I have nearly a half dozen 200 mile rides in my legs -- hello 200 Not On 100!).Please follow along throughout the day tomorrow with the handsome hashtag #3peaksSF since we're celebrating the three enormous peaks of the San Francisco Bay area. And we're celebrating Nate's final weekend here in California before he ships off to be the chief tour operator at inGamba. You want the most amazing tour available on two wheels, inGamba is the place for that. Period. And if you find yourself in the Bay area on Sunday, please come by for a sweet bike ride at Studio Velo. 8am meet, 8:30 we ride.
